Victorian Tile cleaning and restoration (Harpenden)

I have been cleaning and restoring original Victorian tiles for a long time. We specialized in the installation of new Victorian tiled hallways and pathways for several years and then gained valuable professional cleaning experience in order to deep clean Victorian tiles effectively. I can assure you that your Victorian tiling restoration work will be in very good hands!

I can deep clean your Victorian Minton style tiles and replace any damaged ones. Once complete they will be finished with color enhancing sealers and a protective wax coating. The wax finish on these tiles adds an attractive depth and sheen to the floor which help blend in old and new tiles used for the repair work.

nice Victorian style geometric hallway that has been completely restored. before and after pic

In the pic above you can see the black and white checker restoration in a hallway.About 90% of the tiles in this one where just loose and the children where playing with them and making tile piles 🙂 , So it was quite a big job to take them all up, prep them and them , sort out the sub base and then relay them.

BEFORE
the same Victorian tiled hallway from the pic above completely restored and cleaned
AFTER
As you can see in the before pic of this one it was completely wrecked. All the other restorers this client spoke to said it couldn’t be done and told her to get a new floor.

Its hard to believe that its the same floor in the two pics above so just be sure your Victorian tiles are in good hands.

We work all over Hertfordshire and North and West London and sometimes travel further. Drop us an email if you require this work and dont forget we can clean other types of tiles and stone as well.

This more complex geometric tiled Victorian floor has encaustic tiles. These tiles are very expensive to have made and are composed of two different clays to make the tile.

How do we clean your Victorian tiles?

There are different ways to clean these old tiles up and you may find that everyone says a different thing! This difference of opinion amongst key product suppliers and professional installers made it quite hard to know what the best way to clean them was.

So we tried everything and found a unique mix of techniques and chemicals to achieve the best possible result. We firstly aim to preserve the surface of the tile and so will always use steam before aggressive floor pads. There are however some floors that need to be machined.

Then its a case of stripping all the old oils and wax that the Victorians usually applied to these old tiles allowing us to access the dirt deep within these porous tiles. Once everything is out of the tile we then put clean protective sealer and wax back into them.
